Parler Praises Letter on Justice and Open Debate
Free speech platform commends principle behind letter calling for open dialogue, end to cancel culture
Washington, DC – Parler, the People-driven social platform, today applauded “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate.” The piece, published on-line and set to appear in Harpers Magazine, is signed by 150 prominent, ideologically diverse writers, scholars, artists, and journalists. While applauding recent activism calling for criminal justice reform and inclusion, the letter criticizes cancel culture and an “intolerant attitude that has set in on all sides.”
Quoting the letter:
“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted. …[C]ensoriousness is…spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought

“The restriction of debate… invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation. The way to defeat bad ideas is by exposure, argument, and persuasion, not by trying to silence or wish them away.”
Letter signatories include world-renowned author J.K. Rowling, trumpet virtuoso Winton Marsalis, speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, conservative columnist David Brooks, and progressive luminary Noam Chomsky.
